ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) — Work has started on a central Indiana city’s annual community cleanup a few weeks after it was in doubt because of city budget troubles.

The 30th annual Rev. JT Menifee Citywide Clean Up campaign began Monday in Anderson and is running through May 17.

Anderson officials had said they couldn’t afford to have city workers participate because its budget was strapped from the costs of clearing snow over the winter. The Herald Bulletin reports an $18,000 donation from the Indianapolis Colts is helping cover the city’s expenses.

Mayor Kevin Smith says he believes the donation is a sign of confidence in the city where the Colts hold their summer training camp. Smith says he hopes the cleanup campaign builds pride in the community.
