Police investigate deadly southwest side crash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police say shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday, they were called to a deadly crash on the city’s southwest side.

According to IMPD officials, the wreck involved an SUV and a box truck. It happened on State Road 37 and Southport Road. The Mercedes SUV crashed into the back of the truck, which was stopped at a red light. There were no skid marks at the scene.

The male driver of the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say the driver and passenger of the box truck were not hurt and that the passenger of a vehicle stopped in front of the box truck was taken to a local hospital in good condition.

Officials ask for drivers to avoid the area for a few hours as they investigate the accident. Drivers were being diverted to Bluff Road.

An officer at the scene initially told 24-Hour News 8 that texting was involved in the crash. However, officials with IMPD and IFD later said it was too early in the investigation to say whether texting was involved.
