INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A new Indiana program will give volunteer fire departments smoke alarms to hand out to the communities they serve.

In all, 500 smoke alarms with 10-year batteries will be given to departments as part of a $10,000 grant from State Farm Insurance.

Departments interested in applying for the smoke alarms can click here.

Anyone in need of a smoke alarm should contact their local fire department. Some have smoke alarms for free or for a lower price. Hardware stores also sell them. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
