Dance Program Offers Students a Step in the Right Direction

Fresh off the school bus these wide-eyes students from Andrews Academy travel to the Athenaeum in downtown Indianapolis every Wednesday for dance class. They are part of what’s called Kids Dance Outreach. Michael J. Johnson, founder of K-D-O offers classes, free of charge, to inner city students.

Michael J. Johnson says, “Kids need to be active and using dance and live music is a wonderful way to get their minds and bodies active.”

It’s a program founded on structure, teamwork and of course fun. The orderly nature of classical dance comes into play as soon as the children enter the dance studio. For two hours every Wednesday these student learn more than just dance.  According to Michael, “This isn’t just a dance program where you learn dance steps what we are doing it giving the kids an opportunity to learn that trying and wanting to do better for yourself does pay off.”
