According to Jackson County Sheriff Michael Carothers, Deputy Rick Meyer was following up on the report of a suspicious person. Deputy Meyer was talking with the suspect, when someone off on the side opened fire.

Deputy Meyer was wearing a bulletproof vest, but was hit in both of his shoulders. The suspect was hit in the arm.

Sheriff Carothers says both Meyer and the suspect were flown to IU Health Methodist Hospital and are expected to make full recoveries.

Sheriff Carothers says one gunshot wound went in and out of Deputy Meyer’s shoulder area.  A second bullet remains lodged in the other shoulder.  Meanwhile we are told the suspect will be undergoing surgery to repair bullet wounds in the elbow area.

The investigation is ongoing. The suspects’ names have not been released.

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #86 went to the hospital Thursday night with care packages for the deputy’s family.
