INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A basement fire on the south side of Indianapolis caused significant damage to a home a couple shared for 44 years.
Fire crews responded to a home in the 3000 block of Sumner Avenue at 9:40 Monday morning. The couple living in the home heard two loud booms. Heavy smoke was coming from the basement. The fire was located underneath the kitchen floor.
Two fire departments responded to the scene, including Beech Grove and Indianapolis. It took 20 minutes to control the fire. The owner of the home believed the fire to be electrical. Damage was estimated at $80,000.
The couple was not injured in the fire, but was checked for smoke inhalation.
