CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — A northwestern Indiana man who allegedly helped plan a convenience store robbery during which the store’s clerk was slain has received a 12-year prison sentence.
Twenty-three-year-old Donvell A. Edwards of Merrillville had pleaded guilty to robbery in connection with the March 2012 armed robbery of a Lucky Mart Foods store in Merrillville.
The Times of Munster reports court documents say Edwards, who was sentenced Friday in Lake County Criminal Court, helped plan the store’s robbery.
That armed robbery led to the fatal shooting of 48-year-old store clerk Judi Simpson-Beaver.
Prosecutors say 23-year-old co-defendant Jeremy Blue fatally shot Simpson-Beaver just after the mother of two said, “Jeremy, why are you doing this?”
Blue was convicted on murder and robbery charges and sentenced in March to 80 years in prison.
