Runner critically injured after being hit by bus in Fishers

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) – Fishers police have identified the woman who was critically injured after being hit by a bus near 116th and Olio Saturday morning.

According to police, Erin Harris, 34, of Fishers, was running northbound in a crosswalk in the 11700 block of Olio Road when she was hit by a school bus shortly after 6 a.m.

The school bus was attempting to turn north onto Olio Road from the entrance of a shopping center, just north of 116th Street, when it hit Harris. FPD said David McCollum, 69, of Indianapolis, was driving the bus.

Police said there were a lot of pedestrians in that area who were preparing to run in the annual Geist Half Marathon and 5K.

“It was still dark here, and there were a lot of pedestrians in the area,” Tom Weger, spokesman for the Fishers Police Department, said.

Harris was first taken to IU Saxony Hospital and was later transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Weger said Harris underwent surgery at Methodist Hospital Saturday morning.

Police said she was listed in critical condition as of 8:50 on Saturday evening.

The FPD’s Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to collect evidence and investigate the crash, according to Weger.

Police said they do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
