INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Veterans were honored for the 4th Annual Mayor’s Veterans Family Appreciation Day on Saturday.

Mayor Greg Ballard saluted service men and women at Garfield Park. Organizers thanked the Mayor for his dedication to those who serve. Indianapolis provides some of the strongest support for veterans in the country.

The picnic helped vets know what resources are out there. Don Hawkins, an organizer for the event said vets are not asking for the help they need. “We’re finding it hard that a lot of veterans don’t want to ask for help and that’s why the more that we can communicate with them, the more we can meet with them the more we can let them know that we are here to help them.”

Vets and their families enjoyed a fish fry, classic car show, music, games and more. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
