INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis 500 is this weekend, and to get Hoosiers in the spirit, a special race was held at the Indianapolis Zoo Wednesday morning.

Five tortoises took part in one of the zoo’s most popular and longest running traditions.

The tortoises raced to the finish line during the 34th annual Zoopolis 500, where fruit–not milk–was waiting for them.

A member of the winning “pit crew” celebrated the victory by drinking the milk.

IndyCar expert Mike King was master of ceremonies and Indianapolis 500 Champion Tony Kanaan served as grand marshal. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
