INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Thousands of race fans flooded the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday for Carb Day.

Gates opened at 8 a.m. and the crowd was ready to spend the day enjoying music, food, and fast cars.

IMS President Doug Boles said the gorgeous weather was key in Friday’s great turnout. Boles said this was an even bigger crowd than anyone at IMS expected.

“The great part about Carb Day, is really the way that the community of Indianapolis just celebrates living here,” said Boles. “People come out whether they’re race fans or not. They just enjoy the sunshine and the cars and the music. So this is more of a party atmosphere than race day, that’s one of the things that I really enjoy.”

Tony Kanaan, in his Target Chip Ganassi Racing car was the fastest on Friday in the 60-minute drafting and pit stop exercise. Kanaan will start in the 16th position on Sunday for the Indianapolis 500.

Performances by Sublime, Sammy Hagar, and the Wabos topped off the day.

Several lifetime fans told 24-Hour News 8 that this year was the best Carb Day they’ve attended, and that it just keeps getting better every year.
