BROOKVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A 9-year-old girl has died after she was injured in a bicycle accident at an Indiana state campground.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the girl was rapidly cycling down a paved incline at the Mounds Recreational Area campground in southeastern Indiana when she tried to slow down by using her feet instead of the brakes.

Authorities say the bicycle went off the road and hit a ditch, causing her neck and throat to strike the bike’s handlebars. Police say she wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Campers cared for her until emergency crews arrived, and she was flown to a Cincinnati hospital where she later died.

The girl’s identity wasn’t released.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
