Excise arrests 211 people during Indy 500 weekend

Indiana State Excise Police write citation at IMS.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)  – Indiana State Excise Police arrested 211 people on 250 charges during the Indianapolis 500 weekend this year. Police said most of the charges were alcohol and drug-related.

Officers patrolled the area inside and near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway throughout the weekend. Police said most of the arrests made were on Saturday night during the Jason Aldean concert and on the streets near the IMS, particularly along Georgetown Road.

“Public safety is a priority for the State Excise Police. Alcohol consumption is expected at events like the Indianapolis 500; however, irresponsible consumption often causes problems that can lessen the enjoyment by many race fans,” Superintendent Matt Strittmatter said.

The Speedway Police Department arrested 24 people total from Friday to Sunday, according to a press release. 11 of those people were arrested for public intoxication, but one of those arrests was murder.

Early Saturday morning, a Kokomo man was fatally shot in the Coke Lot near the IMS. Speedway police arrested Avory Johnson, 19, of Indianapolis, on a murder charge shortly after the shooting.

A second shooting was reported at the Coke Lot early Sunday morning. Police said an armed robbery lead to that shooting. A man was critically injured and multiple suspects are on the loose, according to police.

Police are still searching for the suspects involved.

“If you were out there in that area of the Town of Speedway, if you saw or heard anything, please give us a call,” Lt. Travis Theobald, with the Speedway Police Department, said.

IMPD said another set of shots were fired near 30th and Georgetown near the Coke Lot shortly after 5 a.m. on Sunday. Police said nobody was injured in that shooting.

“I’m sure these are a couple incidents that will be brought up and we’ll look at it and see what we can do to make next year that much safer,” Lt. Theobald said.

Despite those shootings, Indiana State Police told 24-Hour News 8 that it was a relatively quiet night on Sunday at the Coke Lot.

According to excise, last year, officers arrested 181 people during the Indy 500 weekend.
