1 dead, 1 injured in east side shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One person was killed and another person was taken to the hospital after a shooting on the east side of Indianapolis Monday afternoon, officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirm.

Officers were called to the 400 block of North Denny Street, in between East Michigan and East New York streets, shortly after 4 p.m.

When police arrived they found two men with apparent gunshot wounds. EMS officials arrived shortly after and pronounced one man dead. The other victim was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition.

Detectives say they believe this was an isolated incident and not a random act. They are gathering information and taking witness statements to determine a motive.

Police on scene led an individual away in handcuffs. They say that individual matched the description of a person of interest, but they haven’t called him a suspect. Officers spotted him in a nearby crowd, and say he was wearing the same items that one of the suspects may have been wearing.

Anyone with information is urged to call IMPD detectives at 317-327-3475. Callers wishing to remain anonymous are urged to call Crime Stoppers of Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477). Callers can also text “INDYCS” plus tip information to 274627(CRIMES).
