INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Nearly 2,000 IU Health team members did their part on Friday to fix up about 20 parks, two schools and one neighborhood across the state.

It was all part of their Day of Service they do every year. Groups helped spruce up 19 parks. At Riverside Park in Indianapolis they put up new outdoor fitness equipment for kids to play on.

There were also surprises for some Indianapolis Public Schools students.

“We are placing 165 IPS students, third grade students from neighborhood schools here, on bikes. They are getting fitted for bikes, they are learning about how to ride a bike safely,” said Lisa Cole with IU Health. “We have IMPD out here to demonstrate how to do that, and they are getting fitted for their helmets so they can have a safe and physically active summer.”

The volunteers also created 3,250 walking kits, 34 new picnic tables and nine pieces of new playground equipment among other park improvements to encourage more Hoosiers to get out and get active.
