Police search for suspects who fired shots at state troopers

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police say shots were fired at Indiana State Police troopers on the east side of Indianapolis late Thursday night.

Police say shortly before midnight, two of their officers were driving an unmarked police vehicle in the area of Lakeview Apartments, near East 21st Street and Mitthoefer Road.

That’s when the officers say an armed suspect leaned out the passenger window and fired shots at them. Neither officer was injured.

According State Police, they were assisting Indianapolis Metro Police following a report of gunshots coming from a white 4 door vehicle within the Lakeview Apartment complex. A second report of gunfire came from the same complex and the Troopers spotted a 2002 White 4-door Cadillac driving in a suspicious manner.

As the troopers approached the Cadillac, the driver sped off toward the apartment complex exit. When the unmarked State Police vehicle approached the suspects a second time, they say the Cadillac slowed and the passenger leaned out the window, firing multiple shots from a high powered assault rifle.

State Police say the Cadillac then sped from the apartment complex, heading north on Mitthoefer Road with State Police in pursuit. As the Cadillac approached the intersection of East 30th Street, State Police say the driver lost control and struck a guardrail. The driver and passenger of the suspect vehicle fled on foot.

State Police were joined by Indianapolis Metro Police and Lawrence Police officers to set up a perimeter, eight blocks in each direction of the intersection. Officers say within 45 minutes they took a person into custody.  The perimeter was released shortly before 4 a.m. Friday.

Police said nobody has been arrested and the person they took into custody has not been deemed a suspect.

Police confirmed they recovered the weapon used in the shooting in an area just south of E. 25th St. and N. Mitthoefer Rd.
