HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Howard County police said one man died and three people were injured after a car tried to avoid hitting an injured deer early Sunday morning.

Police said Eddie Taylor, 39, of Marion, was driving west on SR 22 around 1 a.m. when he tried to brake to avoid hitting an injured deer that was in the middle of the road. The car in front of Taylor’s apparently hit the deer.

Taylor’s vehicle left the road and slide sideways before hitting a tree, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department.

The vehicle that hit the deer sustained minor damage and those occupants stopped after the accident to help, according to police.

Police said Taylor had four passengers in the car at the time of the crash. Two were airlifted to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne and one was taken to a local hospital. Those passenger’s names are being withheld pending a complete investigation by police.

The passenger in the backseat, Adam D. Oaks, 37, of Marion, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Taylor took a breathalyzer test that indicted no signs of intoxication.
