INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — As the city of Indianapolis deals with a rash of crime, nearly 60 new police officers are joining the force.
Monday, Mayor Greg Ballard will be swearing-in a new recruit class.
24-Hour News 8 spoke with an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer on Sunday about the importance of the recruits.
“I know they’re excited. This has been a long journey for them and we’re excited that we’ll have additional resources on the street,” IMPD Officer Christopher Wilburn said.
The new class has 47 men and 11 women. Earlier this year a special commission recommended a total force of 1,797 officers. That’s about 230 more than are with IMPD now.
