Three people wounded in gas station shootout

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Three people were shot outside a gas station on the city’s northeast side early Wednesday.

Two of the three were taken to the hospital in critical condition following the shooting that occurred shortly after 1 a.m.

The scene was just outside the Thorntons’ Gas Station on Pendleton Pike near Shadeland Avenue.

Police say two men bumped into each other walking into the gas station and got into an argument. According to investigators, that’s were both men pulled guns and began shooting at each other at the entrance to the store.

Both men were wounded in the abdomen and the leg. They were taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical but stable condition. They have been identified by Lawrence Police as 25-year-old Wayne Blackman and 34-year-old Maurice Bennett.

A woman police believe was with one of the men was shot in the hand. She was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital and is expected to be OK. Lawrence Police identified her as 38-year-old Shirley Geralds.

The crime scene indicates more than 20 rounds were exchanged. Police say they don’t believe Blackman and Bennett knew each other before hand.

Investigators say Geralds stepped in and was trying to tell the men to knock it off when she was shot.

Three other people were inside the store at the time of the shooting but were not hurt.

Thorntons’ released the following statement later Wednesday morning:

On Wednesday, June 4 around 1:00 a.m., a shooting occurred outside our Thorntons’ store on Pendleton Pike in Indianapolis, IN.

All Thorntons’ team members and customers besides the individuals involved in the incident remain unharmed.

Our store will remain closed while we continue to work with Lawrence Police and Indianapolis Metro Police throughout the investigation. We encourage the public that knows anything about what happened to contact Indianapolis Metro Police at: 327-MOTA (6682).
