INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers said a man was shot and killed on the city’s south side Thursday night. A man was arrested in the shooting, but later released.
Police said the deadly shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. in the 1300 block of Edgecombe Avenue.
A neighbor told 24-Hour News 8 they heard about 10 gunshots in that area. When officers arrived they found a man lying in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly after the shooting, police received a detailed description of a vehicle and a direction of travel. Officers spotted that vehicle in a grocery store parking lot, in the 2100 block of Shelby Street. Police say they approached the vehicle, which had a female and her two small children inside. An individual was then apprehended.
It was later discovered by detectives that the victim, identified as 31-year-old Joshua Tucker of Indianapolis, also likely possessed a handgun during the disturbance. That gun was recovered at the scene. Police say the shooting individual, who officers had previously called a suspect, has a valid Indiana handgun permit to possess his handgun, therefore he has been released pending further investigation. According to IMPD, it will likely be a self-defense type of case.
Detectives say they will meet with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if charges will be applied.
Police say no one else was injured in the shooting. Some homes in the area suffered minor damage. Detectives say they believe that an on-going disturbance involving a dog led to the shooting.
A violent Thursday
IMPD officials said officers responded to at least four shootings in Indianapolis since 4 p.m. Thursday.
Police believe robbery was the motive for a shooting near West 14th Street and Medford Avenue. That victim was shot in the leg.
The second shooting happened in the 6200 block of Commodore Drive. Police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
A third shooting happened at West 23rd Street and North Goodlet Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday. IMPD said a person was shot, but didn’t confirm if the injuries were serious or not.
