INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Public Schools has named its Teacher of the Year.
Tina Ahlgren teaches math at Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy. One of the inspiring reasons she was nominated was for tutoring a sophomore algebra student who became pregnant and thought she would have to quit school.
Ahlgren helped the student return to school and she is getting ready to graduate. She helped another student who didn’t have money for lunch or to pay his cell phone. She helped him get into Vincennes University, too.
Her impact in the classroom helped Shortridge raise its grade from an F to a B.
“It was very exciting – a little bit surprised,” Ahlgren said. “It has been a crazy year for me between having my son 12 weeks ago and being on maternity and trying to keep up with the kids, to make sure that I am still there for them. So this is by far not the first time I have been back when I should be on maternity leave.”
Ahlgren was also one of four IPS teachers who received the Hubbard Life-Changing Teacher Award and won a $25,000 prize.
