MARION COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — After three days in critical condition at a local hospital, a teen involved in a swimming accident in Edinburgh will be taken off life support after organ placement, according to the Marion County Coroner.
Michael Chadbourne has been at IU Health Methodist Hospital since Friday, along with a friend, Sarah McLevish, who is still in critical condition.
It all started Friday just after noon. 16-year-old Sarah McLevish was swimming in the Big Blue River when she somehow fell over the dam into the churning waters. Four boys jumped in after her. Two boys, Mark Nally & Trent Crabb, were able to get out and pull Sarah McLevish and Michael Chadbourne to shore.
“The miraculous part is for someone to ever get spit out of that and to survive that, we’ve lost one of our own officers because of that. That’s the miraculous part that anyone could survive getting out of that boil,” Lt. Bill Browne of Indiana DNR said.
But 17-year-old Jason Moran was lost in the water. Sunday morning rescuers located his body.
Then Monday, the family of Michael Chadbourne decided to donate his organs and take him off life support.
24-Hour News 8 spoke to the Franklin Community High School Football coach about Michael at a vigil on Friday
“Michael is another kid, those two were joined at the hip along with Mark. The three of those guys, I used to make fun of them the little bit about being the three musketeers, because you couldn’t find one without the other two,” Franklin Community High School Head Football Coach Adam Reese said.
He said Michael is a kid who showed great potential.
“He’s really done a good job over the last year. I feel like he’s really grown as a human being and certainly as a football player. But he’s been much better in the classroom and just doing the right things and turning into a mature young man,” Reese said.
If you’d like to contribute to the five families involved in this incident, Franklin Community High School has set up an account at Heartland Community Bank. There is also a GoFundMe account for Michael Chadbourne and an account set up at Mutual Savings Bank for Jason Moran’s family.
