I-Team 8 finds new information from VA investigation

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) –  I-Team 8 has exclusive new information into the investigation into VA medical facilities including those here in Indianapolis.

24-Hour News 8’s chief investigative reporter Karen Hensel shared details from the 54 page inspector general audit.  On Tuesday night there is new information on the fallout of that report. I-Team 8 has confirmed the network director in charge of the seven VA hospitals in four states is investigating at Roudebush VA Medical Center today. This at a time Roudebush is flagged for another review by the VA inspector general.

I-Team 8 has confirmed Paul Bockelman is at Roudebush Tuesday in the wake of the VA scandal. Whistleblowers across the country have stepped forward about “secret wait times” to make scheduling of appointments appear faster.

Dozens of veterans died waiting. Bockelman, the former director of the Marion VA Medical Center, is now in charge of VISN 11, which includes 7 VA hospitals in four states. Those states are Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and northwest Ohio.

A Roudebush spokeswoman confirms he is visiting the facilities “…to meet with schedulers, reinforce proper scheduling practices and ensure he is fully aware of where each facility stands releated to scheduling and access”.

The first audit came after a visit was scheduled for last month.

Roudebush is among 81 hospitals and 31 clinics to be scrutinized further for scheduling and wait times.

Meanwhile, Senator Dan Coats is among 21 senators calling for the FBI and DOJ to investigate evidence of criminal wrongdoing at VA medical facilities.

Indiana Congresswoman Jackie Walorski sits on the House Veterans Affairs Committee “When people die on somebody’s watch somebody should be going to jail”.

What will it take for the VA to restore the trust of veterans? Walorski says, “I think we have to aggressively and very very urgently get to the investigation portion of this and find the people who did this and concocted it. That were willing to stand by with eyes closed, ears closed and not to report it.”

Walorski believes more whistleblowers will step forward. I-Team 8 will follow-up about the network director looking into scheduling at Roudebush.

In the wake of fatal wait times, the house passed a bill letting veterans facing VA delays to get outside health care paid by the government on Tuesday.
