FRANKFORT, Ind. (WISH) — Frankfort firefighters say they had to deal with several small explosions while battling a blaze late Monday at a sawmill on the city’s northwest side.
Neighbors spotted the flames and called 911 around 10:30 p.m. Several neighbors said they heard the explosions, some said it rattled the ground.
Fire crews say the Coomer and Sons Sawmill at Rossville Avenue and Kyger Street was fully involved in flames when they arrived on the scene.
Streets were quickly blocked off and nearby neighborhoods were evacuated as a precaution. No employees were at the business at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within 45 minutes. Some fire crews remained on the scene overnight to put water on remaining hot spots.
Fire officials say the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Damage to the sawmill which has been a part of the community for many years is reported to be extensive.
