PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Indianapolis-native Darwin Elmore died at Putnamville Correctional Facility Thursday night after a stabbing, prison officials said Friday.

Prison staff were alerted to the stabbing around 6:45 p.m., and Elmore was declared dead at 11:32 p.m.

Putnamville Correctional officials described the incident as an “offender on offender stabbing.” An autopsy will be performed to determine an official cause of death.

Prison officials said the suspect was another inmate, who was being kept away from other inmates after the stabbing. The inmate’s name won’t be released until charges are filed in the case.

Elmore, 34, was serving two sentences for dealing cocaine. He was expected to be released in about two years.
