SULLIVAN, Ind. (AP) — Democratic precinct committee members in western Indiana have elected Bionca Gambill replace retiring Rep. Kreg Battles in the General Assembly.

Gambill, who is from southern Vigo County, is expected be sworn in before the Legislature convenes later this month and also will be the Democratic nominee for the seat in the general election. Gambill will face Republican Bruce Borders in the general election.

Borders is a former state representative whom Battles defeated by an 89-vote margin in 2012 when state redistricting threw them into the same district.

Battles, who is from Vincennes, announced last month he was resigning to spend more time with his five grandsons.

Also Saturday, Democratic precinct committee members in House District 59 elected Zack Ellison of Columbus to run against incumbent GOP Rep. Milo Smith.
