Man critically injured after shooting on southwest side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police said a man was critically injured after a shooting on the city’s southwest side Sunday afternoon.

According to IMPD spokesman, Rafael Diaz, officers received a call about shots being fire in the 3200 block of S. Rybolt Avenue, off of Kentucky Avenue, around 3:50 p.m.

Officers arrived to find a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his chest.

The victim was found at the back of the home near a detached garage, according to Diaz.

Police said the victim was taken to Eskenazi Heath in critical condition and immediately underwent surgery. The bullet went into his upper chest and out his back, according to police.

IMPD’s Homicide and Aggravated Assault Units are on scene awaiting a search warrant to start gathering the evidence, according to Diaz.

Diaz said the shooting does not appear to be a random act of violence, but it’s still being investigated.

Neighbors told police they saw two or three people running away from the scene after the shooting.

According to Diaz, there is no suspect information as of Sunday night.
