INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – One person is dead and two others were wounded in a gun battle on the city’s southwest side early Monday.
At 12:18 a.m. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were called to the 3100 block of South McClure Street on a report of a shooting.
When they arrived, police found a man dead of apparent gunshot wounds lying in the driveway. A woman was found nearby with a gunshot wound to her face. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police received another call that a man possibly involved in the shooting was already on his way to the hospital in a private vehicle. Police say that man had gunshot wounds to his head and shoulder. He is reported to be in stable condition.
Investigators say they believe a domestic dispute earlier in the evening may have lead to the shooting. Police say the deceased man and his girlfriend’s family got into at a family gathering at the residence. After the dispute the man was asked to leave.
Around midnight, the man reportedly returned, armed with a baseball bat and a few friends. Detectives say the man began to assault his girlfriend’s mother outside of the home.
According to police, gunfire broke out as the husband of the female victim fired shots at the attacking male. Police say the man’s friends who were waiting in the car began to shoot toward the home.
When the gun battle ended, one person was dead, one person was in critical condition and a third person was in stable condition.
Police are continuing to collect evidence and talk to witnesses.
Wendell Vanbuskirk, 47, was the person who died. The others who were injured were Lisa Farley and Aridith Curbeaux.
