INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A Marion County Judge had his passion become a reality, and it could help save a child’s life.

A new “prescription drug drop box” can be found in the lobby of the Marion County Jail located downtown. The box comes from the group “Drug Free Marion County” led by Judge William Nelson.

Judge Nelson’s 20-year-old son died from a prescription drug overdose in 2009.

“When addiction an addiction gets a hold of you, it doesn’t let go. The last conversation was his promise to go back to Fairbanks. Unfortunately, it was a day too late. Hopefully, with this program, we can prevent other parents from having to suffer the worst tragedy that one can ever imagine,” said Judge Nelson.

The government now calls prescription drug abuse an “epidemic” which kills more people than cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and meth combined.

The city of Lawrence is also adding a drop box. The goal is to add others around Marion County. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
