COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) –Several fire departments responded to a single story residence fire on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire started inside a home in the 5200 block of Ohio Ridge Road in Columbus at 12:10 p.m.
Heavy smoke was coming from home when fire departments arrived.
The homeowner said he had just started the dryer when he smelled smoke. When he went to open a window he noticed fire coming from the area of the dryer.
Occupants inside the home made it out safely.
The home and the items inside were a total loss.
The fire was under control by 12:52 p.m., but the fire caused the responded departments to travel around five miles for water to put out the fire.
One firefighter was transported to the hospital to be check for heat related injuries. He was treated and released. Two others were checked at the scene.
In all seven fire departments responded to the fire.
An investigation to determine the exact cause was being conducted by the Bartholomew County Fire Investigator/Inspector.
