WHITING, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a teenager died after jumping into Lake Michigan from a fishing pier at a northwestern Indiana city park.

Indiana Conservation Officers say 18-year-old Jose Alcazar of Hammond and two friends jumped into the lake Monday evening from the pier at Whiting Park.

Sgt. Shawn Brown says witnesses told officers that Alcazar began to struggle in the water and then disappeared under the surface.

Brown says crews from the Coast Guard, Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Unit and Indiana Conservation Officers joined in the attempt to find Alcazar. He says a diver recovered the teen’s body late Monday nearly 50 feet from the pier.

Brown says an autopsy was planned to determine the cause of Alcazar’s death. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
