HOBART, Ind. (AP) — A water-filled pit where two young Gary brothers drowned has been drained and filled as police continue to investigate their deaths.

Eight-year-old Terrion Smith and 9-year-old Donel Smith died Saturday night while playing with other children on the property. The boys’ mother, Tatiana Smith, told The Times of Munster that when Terrion went under, Donel jumped in to try to save him.

Police Chief Richard Zormier said officers had to swim to depths greater than 12 feet to retrieve the boys, who were at the bottom and unresponsive. They were pronounced dead at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.
