COLUMBUS, Ind. (The Republic) — Police in Columbus rescued a 2-year-old boy from a hot car on Thursday after the child’s father was found passed out and slumped over the wheel.

Columbus Police saved the child from a car that was in the FairOaks Mall parking lot around 2 p.m. Temperatures in the vehicle were in the 90s, 24-Hour News 8’s news partners at The Republic report.

Police were originally called after a passerby saw 27-year-old James Elgar in the car. The driver’s side door was open. It was when officers arrived to check on him that they saw the 2-year-old in the back seat and called for medical help.

At this point police don’t know how long Elgar and the boy were in the car. The child is recovering, and Child Protective Services was called.

Elgar was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of child neglect, a Class D felony, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia, both Class A misdemeanors.
