PAOLI, Ind. (AP) — A warrant charges a southern Indiana man with murder in connection with the fatal shootings of two Paoli men and the wounding of a third, Indiana State Police said Wednesday.
Sgt. Philip Hensley said investigators obtained an arrest warrant for John Robert Carpenter of Marengo, who remains at large.
The shootings occurred Monday at the rural mobile home of Nicholas Fields, 56. Fields was found dead inside the home, and Cory Michael Harris, 25, was found outside with a gunshot wound to his head. Harris died Tuesday at University Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, a coroner there confirmed.
A third man, 29-year-old Daniel Smitson, remained hospitalized Wednesday in Louisville recovering from a gunshot wound to the mouth. Paoli is located about 45 miles northwest of Louisville.
Carpenter, 35, is considered armed and dangerous.
Investigators were led to Carpenter by Smitson, who knew the suspect, as well as tips to state police and a description of a vehicle spotted at the shooting scene, Hensley said. Carpenter was last seen driving a pickup truck.
A motive for the shootings remained unclear, Hensley said.
