INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — First Lady Karen Pence is donating $22,000 to state charities through a new foundation she started.

The money will go to 28 organizations throughout the state focused on helping Indiana families and children. Pence said Wednesday she started the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation to help the many organizations who were reaching out for her support.

Pence began the foundation last August and awarded $100,000 in April to an art therapy program at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

The grants awarded Wednesday range between $500 and $1,000. The foundation plans to make other small grants throughout the year. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
