LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A dog abandoned in a dumpster in Lafayette has found a new home.

Gus, a pit bull, was found by Lafayette Animal Control in March. He was then taken to Almost Home Humane Society.

Almost Home discovered Gus was suffering from mange, among other health problems. Gus was treated at Purdue University’s Small Animal Clinic where he made a full recovery.

That’s where Veterinary Medicine student Rachel Wiesen met Gus and volunteered to adopt him. Wiesen says Gus’ road to recovery was shaky at the start.

“He slept 24 hours a day. I had to wake him up to carry him outside to go to the bathroom. He wouldn’t even stand to go to the bathroom. I had to hand feed him. Nurse him back to health, basically,” Wiesen explained.

She said after that first month, he started to perk up. He started sleeping maybe 20 hours a day and started to explore more.

“He was still really scared. My dog helped him figure out what things were and things are okay,” Wiesen said.

Almost Home manager Liz Stamper said there are many alternatives for people who can no longer care for their pet.
