GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) – An emotional ceremony of appreciation took place on the Sunday before July 4 in front of a full congregation at a Greenwood church.

Grace Assembly of God hosted an Honor Our Heroes service of thanks for military and public safety service members in central Indiana.

The celebration featured special guest speakers including Ret. General J. Stewart Goodwin, the executive director of the Indiana War Memorials, the director of Indiana Department of Homeland Security, John Hill and Indiana State Police Supt. Doug Carter.

“We, as veterans, are very, very honored to be with the first responders and the police department, law enforcement. We share something that most people don’t. We run to the problem as opposed to running away from it,” Goodwin said.

All service men and women in attendance at the church were asked to the front of the crowd where they were presented with a special medal by the church.

The decoration was meant to represent “their dedication and selfless sacrifice in service to our community, state and nation,” organizers said.

Many of those commemorated could be seen wiping tears during the ceremony.
