ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) – A driver of a scooter was taken to the hospital after he was hit by a drunk driver on Monday evening.
The crash happened at 29th and Main streets in Anderson around 5:15 p.m. The driver of the scooter was unconscious and suffered a head injury. He was flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis in serious condition.
24-Hour News 8’s news partners at the Herald Bulletin report that Calvin Drake Shelton, 19, the driver of the car that collided with the scooter was preliminarily charged with operating while intoxicated. One of the three passengers in the car was preliminarily charged with underage consumption of alcohol.
Police say the scooter was heading east on 29th street when he was hit by a Chevy Lumina. The Lumina was heading westbound on 29th when the car turned into the scooters path.
The intersection was blocked off for several hours while police investigated.
Shelton also has a prior conviction for driving under the influence in May 2013. He was also charged with possession of marijuana and operating a vehicle as a minor with alcohol in June.
