FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A police officer kicked down a door to a pool, and in full uniform jumped into the water to save a toddler Saturday morning after two children were found wandering around near an apartment complex.

Police said a man called police after two toddlers showed up at his house after wandering out of an apartment complex.

According to the police report, just after 7:20 a.m. police started searching Fountain Lake Apartments on the 6500 block of Reed Road.

Police searched the area for the boys for twenty minutes when another officer, Christine Armstead, went to the scene to help search.

While driving through the apartment complex Armstead spotted a child in the Fountain Lake apartment pool and saw an arm go up in the air from the water. When she was closer to the pool she noticed the child drowning.

At first Armstead tried to climb over a fence, but instead she decided to kick the door down. Without time to take her duty belt off, the officer jumped into the pool and pulled the child out of the water.

The child was making a distressed sound, but after another officer performed CPR the child was able to get the water out of his lungs.

Police said at that time a resident of Fountain Lake Apartments came by the pool looking for his girlfriend’s two children. The resident told police the back patio door to their apartment had been locked the night before but was open in the morning and the children were gone.

Police said the child was in fine condition after being taken to the hospital.
