WINONA LAKE, Ind. (WISH) – Storms that hit Indiana early Tuesday brought tragedy to one family in northern Indiana’s Kosciusko County.
Police say a 14-year-old boy was killed when strong winds sent a tree crashing on top of a mobile home in Winona Lake.
“There was like a crack and it was raining and the wind was blowing hard and then we just heard a big crash and it busted the house,” said 10-year-old survivor Corbitt Hollon.
Hollon was inside his mobile home when the storm rolled through around 1 a.m. Tuesday.
He said he and his 14-year-old neighbor and best friend, Danny, were playing games on their phones when the tree crashed down.
“I moved out and I yelled Danny’s name and all I heard was, ‘Uhh,’” Corbitt said.
Corbitt escaped with just a scratch, but Danny wasn’t as lucky.
“The tree was right on Danny, and I thought he just like got hurt a lot, like a bunch, but I didn’t know that he died,” Corbitt said.
Corbitt said he tried to help his friend but couldn’t, and he somehow found a way out.
“He doesn’t know how to take it, he thought it was a nightmare,” his mother, Chrissy Hollon, said. “But when he came out this morning, he started crying because he saw it wasn’t a nightmare, and I think he’s still in a little bit of a shock.”
She said her son is struggling to understand what happened.
“I’m sad about it,” Corbitt said. “I cried this morning because I miss him.”
The Titus Funeral Home in Warsaw is accepting donations for Danny’s funeral.
His family says they don’t have insurance.
