Red Gold Tip:Grilling Temperature

Searing a steak is great at high temperature, but putting a chicken breast on that heat it will overcook. To test the temperature, hold your hand over the heat (approx 6 inches away) and count how many seconds you can keep your hand there.

3 sec: High heat 450-650 degrees — this is almost too hot to cook anything. Some food, like a tuna steak , would benefit from a high heat.

5 sec: Med- High about 375-400 — perfect temp for burgers, sliced veggies and fish.

7 sec: Medium heat 325-375 — it’s a fire low enough to gently cook, but hot enough to brown outsides nicely during longer cook time. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
