CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – Thousands of people attended the annual Carmelfest on Friday to celebrate the holiday.

The two-day event has one of the largest Fourth of July parades in Indiana.

“People are so enthusiastic, they’re so patriotic,” First Lady Karen Pence said of the atmosphere at Carmelfest.

Governor Mike Pence was there and Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard rode in a Corvette during the parade. 24-Hour News 8’s Eric Halvorson, Ken Brewer and Amy, the face of MyINDY, walked the parade route to promote Gr8 Health.

The event also features bands, food, entertainment and floats.

Carmelfest also hosts its own fireworks show at the end of the night.

Officials said the event has grown dramatically since 1988 when Carmelfest first began with a few booths and food tables in an empty parking lot. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
