INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The fifth annual Pokemon National Championships kicked off in Indianapolis on Saturday.
Players as young as 6 years old all the way to adults went head-to-head in the competition.
The event is described as a fun, festival-like atmosphere with camaraderie and healthy competition.
Some parents say it’s also improving academic performance.
“Their scores on standardized tests have soared. But, they also give college scholarships for this as well,” Shannon Hurley said. Hurley’s son was competing in the championships.
This is the first day of competition which runs through Sunday.
The winner will compete at the world championship which is held in Washington, D.C. in August.
