COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) — A mother and father in Columbus were arrested over the weekend after police say their child was found locked in a car.

It happened Saturday in the Kohl’s parking lot, located at 711 Creekview Drive, around 6:30 p.m. Police arrived and found a vehicle running and a 6-year-old boy inside crying. His hair was wet with perspiration, 24-Hour News 8’s news partners at The Republic report.

Police tried to calm the boy down and asked him a number of times to unlock the door. When the child complied, police say they found the air conditioner was running but it was blowing out warm air.

The child’s parents, 43-year-old Shabbir H. Fanee and 40-year-old Fizza Fanee, both of Columbus, were arrested and are accused of leaving the boy in the car. They have been preliminarily charged with neglect of a dependent, a Class D felony.
