MONROE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) –  Two people are dead after a house fire near Ellettsville Thursday morning. Investigators say they believe foul play was involved.

Firefighters were called around 8:30 a.m. after neighbors saw smoke coming from a home in the 7300 block of North Red Hill Road.

Detectives haven’t identified who was found dead inside the home, but they say a mother and her teenage son were the only ones who were living there at the time.

“Neighbors expressed a concern that a woman might be inside the home. She had made some comments about harming herself and her son,” said Detective Sergeant Brad Swain.

Swain says they found a gun near the two bodies in a bedroom.

“We are talking with the family, looking at messages she sent on social media to try to give us an idea of why this may have happened,” said Swain. “We don’t believe we need to be searching for a suspect.”

Neighbors told 24-Hour News 8 they heard loud pops, what they thought were gunshots, before they saw the smoke billowing from the home.

“I heard a bang. I heard another bang,” said one neighbor. “When I went outside, I saw a bunch of smoke.”

He also said he saw the family’s car in the driveway.

“We ran to the house, grabbed rocks, busted the front windows out,” he explained, saying they’d tried to get in to help, but couldn’t.

In the meantime, neighbors say they’re concerned about the family, saying the son was just about to start high school.

“Her son was a star student, awesome basketball player,” said one neighbor. “This will really hurt a lot of people in Ellettsville.”

The Monroe County Coroner says autopsies are scheduled for Friday morning in Terre Haute. After that, they will be able to release the names of those found inside that house and how they died.
