INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – School is about a month away but many families got an early start on Saturday getting their child ready to go back to school.
Hundreds of families took part in the second annual Back to School Community Fun Day in Fountain Square. The day was filled with food, games and activities for the entire family.
The Salvation Army partnered with several organizations and schools in the community to help make going back to school much easier for families.
About 500 kids who live in the boundaries of 46203 and 46225 also received free backpacks filled with supplies.
Amber Melton says the event helped her and her children.
“I needed the assistance and it’s definitely a blessing,” Melton said.
“One of the greatest things about helping out children this way is there’s a lot of things they have to worry about getting ready for school and we don’t want something like backpacks or schools supplies to be one of the things that they have to worry about while they get ready to go back to school,” Captain Justin Windell with the Salvation Army said.
Captain Windell says they could use all of the help they can get to continue the backpack giveaway. If you would like to help, you can do so throughout the year with monetary donations or just by volunteering. Click here for more information.
