MONTICELLO, Ind. (WLFI) – A woman died Saturday after a wave runner accident on Lake Shafer in Monticello.

It happened just after 4:00 p.m. just above the Norway Dam.

Two civilians witnessed the accident and helped pull Anne L. Wittstock, 43, of Burbank Illinois, from the water. A man was also on the back of the wave runner at the time.

Monticello firefighters say when they arrived, Wittstock was in cardiac arrest and CPR was performed.

DNR officials said for an unknown reason, Wittstock drove the wave runner into the NIPSCO security cables that are stretched across the lake to keep boaters away from the Norway Dam.

The woman was taken to IU Health White Memorial and was later flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Wittstock was pronounced dead at Methodist.

The male passenger, Joseph P. Allen, also of Illiniois, was uninjured.

Alcohol and speed are believed to be a factor in this crash, according to the DNR.
