INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An east side community banded together on Sunday to stop the violence in their neighborhoods and across Indianapolis.
Your Life Matters, Peace in the Streets started with a parade at the Brightwood Community Center that finished with a rally in Washington Park.
The park is right next to IMPD’s North District headquarters, which is where fallen IMPD Officer Perry Renn’s squad car is on display.
It’s also near the Brightwood neighborhood, where a double homicide happened last May.
Organizers of the event say that crime was the reason they decided to plan this peace rally. Officer Renn’s death only gave them more cause to get the community involved.
“The timing could not have been more perfect, just to demonstrate that there is a time for change and there is a need for change. But, to actually see this come together is awesome,” Yolanda Mcgaw, Indianapolis resident, said.
At least 200 people walked in the parade and came out for the rally.
City Councilman William Oliver shared a few words with the crowd, hoping to inspire people to promote peace.
