South side highway construction to close ramps

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Those who travel into Indianapolis from the south side for work may have some issues this week.

Contractors for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plan to set bridge beams this week for a new flyover ramp being constructed at the south side Operation Indy Commute I-465 and I-65 interchange improvement project.

The work will force the closure of the existing westbound I-465 to southbound I-65 loop ramp beginning Monday night. The ramp closure is expected to repeat Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

During the overnight closures, ramp traffic will be directed to continue westbound on I-465 to State Road 37/Harding Street (Exit 4) and return eastbound on I-465 to access southbound I-65.

INDOT officials say once the project is complete, the new flyover ramp will replace the existing single-lane loop ramp on the northwest side of the interchange, increasing capacity and improving flow by carrying two lanes of traffic from westbound I-465 over I-465 to southbound I-65.

The $40 million project is adding auxiliary lanes along I-65 to connect between the I-465 and Southport Road interchange ramps. Auxiliary lanes are also being constructed on I-465 between I-65 and Emerson Avenue.

Sherman Drive remains closed until September as the bridge over I-465 is reconstructed and lengthened to accommodate widening I-465 below. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
