Hundreds of students get new shoes for school

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – About 350 students will be stepping into the school year in style thanks to a shoe giveaway Tuesday.

The Salvation Army Fountain Square community center is providing new shoes, free of cost to students from the Salvation Army day camp or area schools.

The annual shoe donations are possible thanks to Laura Lewis a longtime donor. Lewis grew up an orphan, who never had a new pair of shoes as a child.

She hopes these shoes will empower the students to be successful in school.

“To see the expression on their face, it makes them feel great, not only are they getting a new pair of shoes to go back to school. They’ll get a back pack also and will really help them get prepared to go back to school.”

The students who got the shoes had been preselected by counselors of social workers. In the eight years the Salvation Army has done this, they’ve given away 1200 pair of shoes. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
